SOL
Hello friends!
We are very happy to resume these podcast series with a special guest SOL: a passionate DJ, vinyl collector, and graphic designer based in Daegu, Korea. Known for her eclectic sets that dive into 90s balearic, downtempo, house, and techno, Sol isn’t confined by genre—she’s driven by the desire to create an open, boundary-free experience for her listeners. With a deep love for the textures of the 90s and a unique perspective shaped by her background in design, SOL brings a refreshing, genre-blending approach to her craft.
Tune in to hear SOL’s eclectic podcast.
We had the opportunity to have a short interview, where we explored her journey, creative process, and the underground electronic scene in Daegu.
BC: Your sets flow seamlessly across genres—from Balearic to house and techno. What draws you to each of these styles, and how do you weave them together to create a unique vibe?
SOL: “It’s just my feeling.
The reason why I can’t explain in detail is that I dig and collect so many genres that when recording a mix, I usually record without making a set list.
Usually, when recording a radio mix, the first song is decided in one take at once with the feeling I want, and then it flows as it is.
BC: As someone with a love for 90s sounds, what is it about that era’s music that resonates so strongly with you, and how do you keep it fresh for today’s listeners?
SOL: Music in the 90s is very attractive. I was born in 1997, and when I was young, my mom played a lot of Korean music in the 90s. As a result, I naturally became interested.
Music from the 90s is familiar, but there are many with unique and sophisticated sounds. I selected 90’s and the electronic music released these days so that there was no sense of heterogeneity.
BC: You’ve mentioned wanting to be recognized beyond a specific genre. What’s your approach when building a set that reflects this vision? Do you have any personal rules or rituals when choosing tracks?
SOL: I prefer the unique style that I can have musically.
People around me say that even if I play different genres of music, I smell myself.
To do so, I try to find my own feeling.
BC: Being a graphic designer and DJ must give you a unique perspective on creativity. How do these two worlds influence each other in your artistic journey?
SOL: The answer is the same as question 1.
I feel like I’m trying the same way with design or music to find my feeling.
BC: What’s the underground scene like in Daegu? Are there any local artists or collectives you’re excited about that we should keep an eye on?
SOL: Daegu is far from Seoul, the capital of Korea. Unlike Seoul, which has a lot of Venues, Daegu does not have venues, so, we formed a party team called “DIBIRA” to create a party that combines culture, freedom and community building.
