New Podcast Series: Femme Frequency

Ingridients

Hello friends!

It has been a while; we’ve been preparing a series of new special podcasts. We are opening a new round of podcasts dedicated exclusively to up-and-coming female artists.

I’m super excited to open this new podcast with Ingridients; she is a DJ, graphic designer, producer, and creative artist from Bello Horizonte, Brazil. Ingrid has become very predominant in the Bello Horizonte scene.

I have been following her musical journey for approximately a year, which has been an exhilarating experience. Her mixes are composed with utmost precision and flair, which perfectly balances euphoria, catchiness, and contagious dance-floor energy.

Her unique ability to curate and combine different genres is genuinely awe-inspiring. From pulsating beats to uplifting melodies, every element of her mixes is carefully selected to keep the audience entertained. Whether you are a fan of electronic music or simply someone who appreciates a good tune, her mixes will undoubtedly leave you craving more.

As I mentioned, this is a special podcast, and I wanted to share a Q&A she kindly accepted.

What inspired you to pursue a career as a DJ, and how did you get your start in the industry?
Hmmm, I’ve always liked music since I was a child, but not because of anyone’s influences; it was just my own thing. I played a lot in childhood, and I remember putting on huge headphones that my father had, pretending to call a stereo and be a DJ. It just seemed like a joke until I got older, right haha. I used to listen to an FM radio a lot,t too, and I loved the programs with electronic music commanded by DJs. When I was about 15 years old, my sister Isabella and my mother said (jokingly) that I had to be a DJ because I knew ”all” the songs. But I lacked courage for a long time. Four years ago, right before the pandemic happened, I was starting to have my first contact with decks, and then I had to stop. It was a year that I didn’t have the opportunity to play or take classes with anyone, but I turned a lot to myself and so I just researched. Every once in a while,e I would find a controller running around my friend’s house and making a sound, and they always really liked it. So I decided to start believing in them! Haha haha I started playing at friends’ parties, but soon I had my first opportunity at a party for 250 people, and it was absurdly good.

How did growing up in Brazil shape your approach to music, and are there specific elements from Brazilian culture that you incorporate into your sets?

Brazil’s culture is wonderful and inspiring within its framework. The dub and the drums inspire me a lot; I don’t know if it’s due to my childhood experiences in Bahia. In Brazil, MPB(Brazilian popular music) and country music are very common. Still, they are musical genres that, even though I grew up with them around me (there in Montes Claros, a city in the interior), I don’t like these genres. Another thing that inspires me are parties and the joy they bring. I literally grew up around them because of my parents’ work, and I saw a lot of fun out there. Since I started, I’ve brought this fun to my sets, and it’s something that comes very naturally.

The DJing – Electronic Music industry has historically been male-dominated. What challenges have you faced as a female DJ in Brazil, and how have you overcome them?
several challenges, the line-ups massively full of cis men and gays, and a number of feminine people that you can count on one hand, the producers who think they are more significant than everything and everyone… I think these are the things that bother me the most. I still haven’t overcome them, but I’m still trying to integrate myself more and more into the market. Also, through my new project ”Kuir!”, which has the initiative to value LGBTQIPAN+ artists, I believe I can help with some small things in the unequal scenario of underground gender identities.

What are the top three artists inspiring you right now?

Oh…tough. I have many inspirations.

  • Jacquelone (BR)
  • Trajano (br)
  • Capetini (BR)
  • ISAbella (Colombia)
  • Shanti Celeste (uk)
  • Dr Rubistein (Germany)
